Barcelona Football Club and Museum Tour

If you're a die-hard football fan, there's no greater attraction in Barcelona than a tour of the famous Barcelona Football Club (FC) and museum, one of the biggest draws for tourists in Barcelona. The tour is self-guided so there are no guides to take you around. You are free to walk through the special barriers and rope-ways, with signs to point you in the right direction. There are plenty of security personnel around to assist you. Audio-guides are available at the entrance and it's a great idea to pick up one of these to give you more information as you go along.

The magnificent Camp Nou stadium which can seat up to 100,000 screaming fans is itself a great place to start the tour and provides a glimpse of the high-voltage excitement that accompanies a match here. Visitors can avail of the Tour Plus tickets which allow them to access the cordoned-off areas as well and provide a more authentic feel of the club and players.

The tour begins with a ten-minute 3D show giving the main attractions of the stadium and since you're probably here with your kids, they would enjoy this very much as well. The show is a quick run-through of what it's like to be out there on the field during a match. Shots of famous matches are also included. Once you're done with the show, it's time for the real thing!

Next up is the visitor's changing rooms. These are relatively spartan and there is a huge circular communal bath with a jacuzzi here, though your audio guide informs you that the home team's changing rooms are much more luxurious, with a spa, pharmacy and treatment rooms. However, you get a great idea of what it's like in the shower stalls and dressing rooms just before or after a match.

The Barcelona FC puts its faith firmly in the Almighty! The in-house chapel is where they pray for destruction of their enemies and success for themselves.

From here, it's into the players' tunnel and the atmosphere here is simply electric even on a non-match day. It's not difficult to imagine emerging from that tunnel into the lime-light as thousands of shrieking fans greet their favorite players.

The benches or dugouts are where the managers and coaches sit and this is really close to the pitch. It's easy to visualize the heat and excitement of the game from this vantage point. The Press Room for media comments, the hospitality center and the sponsors' room are other important areas. One of the rooms has a priceless lithograph by the Barcelona artist Miro to commemorate the FC.

The Museum is a shrine to the FC and here's where you can see trophies, awards, memorabilia and you can even get a keepsake photo taken of yourself holding the FC trophy aloft! Gifts and souvenirs are available here.

So if you're a football fan, head for the FC Tour in Barcelona!

Enjoy Spain’s Bullfights

Bullfighting is the national sport of Spain. Your Spain cultural tour will remain incomplete without a visit to one of the bullrings of the country. Although considered barbaric and banned in Canary Islands and Catalonia, bullfighting continues to enthrall the Spanish people during fiestas.

The Moor conquerors of the Iberian Peninsula transformed the traditional brutish bullfights of the Visigoths into a ritual observed during festivals or Fiesta Brava. Traditionally, three matadors fight six bulls in the bullring. March to October is the bullfighting season in Spain when several bullfighting festivals are held in different parts of the country. Although the country is dotted with bullrings, the best are the ones in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville that are packed with enthusiasts waving white handkerchief and cheering the matadors as they fight with the bulls.

Popular bullfighting festivals in Spain

San Isidro Fair in Madrid

Every year in the month of May during the San Isidro Fair, held in honour of the patron saint of Madrid, bullfights are organized in the city’s famous Las Ventas bullring. In addition to normal bullfights, bullfights on horsebacks known as rejoeos are popular attractions of the bullring.

San Fermin Fiesta in Pamplona

Although strictly not a bullfighting festival, nonetheless, the running of the bulls in San Fermin Fiestas has made Pamplona one of the most visited cities of Spain during the second week of July, when the festival is held. For nine days, locals and visitors, eager to experience the wrath of the running bulls, dress in red and white clothing gather at the city square. The run that lasts for not more than three minutes is risky yet entertaining.

Fallas Festival in Valencia

In March, people of Valencia welcome spring with the Fallas festival. Along with open-air concerts, large bonfires and fireworks, bullfights are held every day during the fiesta in the city’s bullring. Bullfights attract a large number of visitors to Valencia also during Feria de Julio of the July fair.

April Festival in Seville

The La Maestranza bullring in Seville is packed with noisy crowds cheering the matadors as they encounter the raging bulls on Easter Sunday and during the April festival.

Carnival in Ciudad de Rodrigo

Bullfighting is the main attraction in the Carnival in Ciudad de Rodrigo held every year in February. Along with the matadors, even spectators are invited to join the fight.

Barcelona Columbus Monument: A key attraction of Barcelona

One of the popular attractions of Barcelona, the Columbus Monument is a stunning 197-foot tall tower dedicated to the famous explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus. Located at the southern edge of La Ramblas, a prominent street at the heart of Barcelona, the Christopher Columbus Monument is a key landmark of the city.

One of the finest examples of 19th century Catalan architecture, the monument was constructed for the first international exhibition of Spain, held in 1888. After returning to Spain from his first voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus reported to King Ferdinand V and Queen Isabella I about his discovery in Barcelona. The Barcelona Columbus Monument was built to commemorate the great event.

The design of the monument was selected through a contest. The design submitted by a Catalan artist named Gaieta Buigas I Monrava was approved as the plan of the monument. It took about six years to construct the monument. The entire construction work was undertaken by Catalans.

Architecture of Columbus Monument

The monument comprises of a Corinthian column that stands on an octagonal pedestal. On top of the column stands a 24 feet tall bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. The statue of Christopher Columbus depicts the explorer facing towards the New World with his right index finger pointing in the direction of the Americas. The Spanish word “Tierra”, which means land, is inscribed on the short plinth that supports the statue.

The pedestal of the monument is adorned with statues of griffins and winged victories. People related to Columbus and his voyages to the New World are represented in the portrait medallions on the buttresses against the pedestal. Statues representing Catalonia, Leon, Castile and Aragon are positioned against the buttresses. There are four more statues at the base of the monument. Important scenes associated with Columbus’ first voyage to the New World are depicted in the bas-relief panels of the plinth. The regions visited by Columbus in the Americas are represented in the coats-of-arms in between the bas-relief panels. Statues of lions encircle the monument at the base.

What to see

Four staircases at the base of the monument lead to the elevator in the column. The elevator takes visitors to a viewing platform, at the base of the bronze statue of Columbus, offering a magnificent view of Barcelona and its urban landscape. The Columbus monument is open to visitors from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM throughout the week.

The Very Best Art Museums In Spain

In western art, Spain has significant standing. The art works are influenced by Italian and French artists although the Spanish works are all very unique in their own right. The history of Spain as well as the Muslim influence that it holds greatly contributes to the works of art that can be still seen today in the country.

Other inspirations to the Spanish works of art are counter-reformation climates, hardships as the empire declined among many other reasons. Notable artists have since risen. They include Goya Francisco, el Greco, as well as Diego Velazquez. During the recent centuries, Spain has held quite a unique position in the art arena with some of the artists giving a modernist as well as surrealist approach. The most popular of these are Salvador Dali as well as the famous Pablo Picasso.

For the most popular and numerous art works, visit the two major cities, i.e. Barcelona and the country’s capital Madrid. Here your art needs will be satisfied to a great extent. The museum triangle in Madrid hosts the Museo Del Prado which is actually the very largest in all of Spain. Goya, Velazquez and el Greco works are the most popular within the museum. There are also artworks from German, Dutch, Italian and Flemish masters found here thus adding to available variety.  The Reina Sofia has the very best of Picasso works and some of Dali’s works. Other surrealist, modernist and abstract painter’s works are found here.

Barcelona has connections of the contemporary art as well as modern works and architecture. The Picasso museum is located here and has the artist’s works from the earliest periods of his career. The works of the famous architect Gaudi Antoni are also found here. It is always a delight to sample these great works. Visit the town called Figueres and sample the Salvador Dali museum. The museum itself is his design.

When you move away from Barcelona and Madrid, the museums become less important and also tend to dwindle in size. There are however those that are really worth your time such as the works of el Greco located in Toledo. This is only a day’s trip from Madrid. The works of el Greco such as the disrobing of Christ is found in the cathedral. However, more of his artworks can be found in smaller art museums located around the town. Bilbao has the popular Guggenheim museum which is frank Gerry very own design. It is also quite easy to locate as it is found on the city map.

Murcia And Mar Menor

Murcia is an area which is perfect for agricultural activities and produces spices, vegetables as well as fruits in large quantities such that some are exported to other regions and countries in the world. It is a paradise as the landscapes are outstanding and totally amazing. The city itself was established many years back and there are some remnants of that era that are still visible to date. All these attract their share of tourists each year and therefore are something that is totally amazing.

Murcia is a region worth a visit and if you are a vegetarian, there is no limit to the kinds of dishes that you can enjoy while in the region. There is indeed a lot to be anticipated. For meat and fish lovers, these are also readily available in many places and therefore your nutritional needs will be satisfied to great extents.

Saturdays are very nice days in Murcia especially for those who want a tour of the municipality. On this day, guided tours are offered by the municipality in the area. The tours cover certain areas within the city that hold a lot of interest. You may be required to have a reservation before you indulge in this so be sure that you make it well in advance.

La Manga Del Mar Menor is another area of great interest. The term Mar Menor means a smaller sea which it is in comparison to a greater water body such as the Mediterranean. This is a lagoon that is salty. It is actually the largest of its kind all over Europe. It is situated in Murcia’s coastal region. In this region, there are many great landscapes while the climate is also unique and wonderful to enjoy while in the area.

The lagoon and the Mediterranean are kept separate by a sand promontory stretching some 22 kilometres. It is up to 1200 meters in width at some points but some have only 100 meters. It is a holiday resort of its kind. It harbours many facilities to cater for tourist needs. Enjoying Excursions In Madrid

Madrid is the capital city of Spain and a major attraction to all who want to experience amazing nightlife as well as deep culture and sightseeing moments. There are many monuments that can be seen all over the city and with proper planning or with the right package you can visit the areas of greatest interest within the capital. It is a place where modernity merges with traditions creating quite a blend that is so appealing to many tourists.

Some of the activities that you may engage in while in the city include excursions in various places. El Escorial is a monastery located within the city. It covers an area of over fifty kilometers. The construction of this monastery took some 21 years before completion by some very famous architects from Spain. The measures are great and the style used is austere. The main chapels, throne hall, tombs of the kings as well as the Capilla mayor are attractive parts of this great monastery.

El Valle de los Caidos is yet another fabulous place for excursions. It is a monument in its own respect and something of a wonder to behold. It was built in commemoration of the fallen Spaniards in the civil war of 1940. It has a very tall cross lying on solid rock hollowed so as to include a church. It is at close proximity with El Escorial.

Aranjuez is a town that is attractive as it is very beautiful. The palace located here called Palacio Real is one of the greatest reasons why people come here. It dates back to the 17th century. The throne and porcelain rooms are the major highlights here. There are many beautiful gardens as well as works of porcelain and clocks that also form part of the attraction.

Alcala de Henares is away from Madrid at some 30 km distance. During the renaissance era, the area was a true bloom. There is a university here that was founded back in 1498 by a cardinal called Cineros. It is an area that you should not miss out on. There are walls that date back to the 15th century that are great attractions too. Other attractions include a convent called Bernadas as well as Casa de Cervantes.

Chinchon is another place of interest. This is a village of a medieval era. The main square is totally beautiful. Plaza Mayor is another attraction that bears arcades that are attractive. The square is where major festivities are hosted in the region of Madrid. Chinchon is also made more popular by the gastronomy enjoyed here. Madrid is a destination that is worth consideration.

Attractions in Toledo, Spain

Spain is a country of grand opportunities, great culture, and deep history. The land that is known for beach destinations in Spain is full of natural attractions and architectural wonders, making it rank high among the top tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. And the notable among them all would be some of the top attractions in Toledo, Spain.

Toledo was, historically, the capital city of Spain, before Madrid was given the honours in due course of time. To add to the attractions in Toledo, Spain, the city has been declared a world heritage centre by UNESCO, which has been one of the primary pulls for tourists to visit and explore the region. The city is known for its bustling streets that are filled by the vibrancy of the tourists who are left wondering at all that the city has to offer.

Attractions in Toledo, Spain, include the Alcázar, one of the most prominent attractions in terms of its visual impact – the monumental building was once a fortress used by the Romans to evade hostile invasions into the region. Though it was destroyed many times – once in the 18th century in the War of Succession, later by the vicious flames that engulfed it, and again during the outbreak of the civil war in Spain, it has been reconstructed with a lot of effort to present a face that it is today.

The Cathedral of Toledo is among the other top attractions in Toledo, Spain, which has its origins as early as the 1st century by San Eugenio, who was the first Bishop of the city. This is another historical monument that was once converted into a mosque during the times of Moorish invasions, and was again brought back to what it originally was – a Cathedral that was renowned for its Gothic style of architecture.

Attractions in Toledo, Spain, also include a host of museums in the city, as in the case of Museum of El Greco, the famous painter who resided there, the Museum of contemporary art, which is an art gallery of the 16th century, displaying the contrasts between the art of those times and the art of the present age, and the Museum of Santa Cruz, among others. The host of fiestas that are celebrated all through the city all around the year are included among the other prominent and popular attractions in Toledo, Spain.
